The Mitchum Brothers

Bradley and Rodney Mitchum own the Silver Mustang Casino in Las Vegas, where they are attended by Candie, Sandie and Mandie. They lose a great deal of money to a man who wins three mega-jackpots in an evening, and they have an insurance claim denied by Lucky 7 — a claim the same man's employer processed.

In Part 11 they drive him into the desert to kill him, and stop because Bradley had a dream. The conditions of the dream are met on the spot; the execution is called off; a cheque for thirty million dollars is handed over. From that hour onward the brothers are Dale Cooper's most reliable resource in the state.

Candie is chasing a fly around the office with a red cloth. She swings at it with a television remote and catches Rodney Mitchum across the face. She is destroyed by it — she cannot stop crying, cannot be consoled, cannot get past what she has done to him. Rodney, bleeding slightly, spends the rest of the scene trying to persuade her that it was an accident and that he is not angry.

The Mitchum brothers drive Cooper out into the desert with a shovel in the boot. He has a box with him. Bradley stops. He had a dream, and in the dream the cut Candie gave Rodney was healed — and it is — and in the dream Dougie was carrying a box, and if there was a cherry pie in the box then everything was fine. Rodney has his gun out.

There is a cherry pie in the box. The execution is called off, and Cooper is handed a cheque for thirty million dollars.

The Mitchum brothers arrive at the insurance office in a conga line with Candie, Sandie and Mandie, and Cooper in the middle of it. They have brought Bushnell Mullins gifts: a box of Montecristos, monogrammed diamond cuff links, and the keys to a new car. A wrong has been made right, says Bradley, and the sun is shining bright. Later a gym set and a BMW are delivered to Lancelot Court.

Cooper wakes, moves fast, and asks the Mitchum brothers for a jet to Spokane. They simply provide it.

Cooper arrives at the Twin Peaks sheriff's station with the Mitchum brothers. The room darkens, Woodsmen work over the body on the floor, and the orb containing BOB comes out of it and attacks. Freddie Sykes destroys it.

The Mitchum brothers are the clearest demonstration The Return gives of its own epistemology, and it gives it to the two least serious characters in the season.

Twin Peaks has argued since 1990 that in this world the correct method is not deduction. Cooper throws rocks at a bottle. Briggs takes dictation from deep space. Margaret carries a log. Hawk reads a map that speaks to whatever is happening at the time. Andy is taken up and comes back functional. The consistent finding across the whole archive is that this cosmology does not select for intelligence — it selects for people who will act on what they are shown without arguing.

Bradley Mitchum is that principle in its purest form. He is a casino owner in a shiny suit with a gun in the car, and when a dream tells him something he checks it against the world, finds it accurate, and changes his mind. No training, no philosophy, no supernatural credential. He simply takes the evidence seriously.

What follows from that one decision is not small. Cooper survives Part 11. The thirty million dollars secures the Jones household. The Mitchums become the resource that flies him to Spokane in Part 16 and stand in the room in Part 17 when BOB is destroyed. A dream about a cherry pie is load-bearing for the last third of the season.
