Chantal & Hutch

Chantal Hutchens and Hutch are a married couple on Mr. C's payroll. In Part 2 he wakes Chantal in room 7 and tells her to clean room 6 completely — the room in which he has just killed Darya — and says he will need her and Hutch in a particular area in a few days.

In Part 9 they clean him up at a farmhouse and dress the gunshot wounds Ray Monroe put in him, and take their orders: Warden Murphy within two days, then a doubleheader in Las Vegas. In Part 15 they kill Duncan Todd and his assistant Roger. Over food afterwards they discuss the next name on the list, which is Dougie Jones.

In Part 16 they are shot dead in their van outside the Jones house by a man who wanted to park.

Having killed Darya in room 6, Mr. C wakes Chantal Hutchens next door and tells her to clean room 6 completely, and that he will need her and Hutch in a particular area within days.

Mr. C walks out of the field, filthy and bloody, and reaches a farmhouse. Hutch and Chantal clean him up and dress the gunshot wounds. He gives them work: kill Warden Murphy within two days, and then there is a doubleheader waiting in Las Vegas.

Chantal and Hutch walk into Duncan Todd's office and kill him and his assistant Roger. Over food afterwards they discuss the next name on the list, which is Dougie Jones.

Chantal and Hutch are parked outside the Jones house in their van, eating, waiting for Dougie so they can kill him. FBI agents are watching from further down the street.

A man in a car pulls up behind them and cannot get into his own driveway. He is an accountant, from Zawaski Accounting, and he is Polish, and he is extremely angry. He rams the van. Chantal shoots at him. He gets an automatic weapon out of his boot and empties it through the vehicle, killing them both. He is arrested moments later, still shouting.

Chantal and Hutch are the season's answer to a question the original series never asked: what does it actually take, in labour, to keep something like Mr. C running?

The answer is a married couple with a van. They clean rooms, dress wounds, keep a schedule, kill on instruction and eat in the car afterwards. There is no ideology in it and no fear either — they are the only people in Mr. C's orbit who are not visibly frightened of him, because to them he is the client.

The marriage is what makes them memorable and it is not decoration. Twin Peaks fills its record with couples destroyed by what one of them was doing: Leland and Sarah, Leo and Shelly, Ed and Nadine, Hank and Norma, Bill and Phyllis Hastings. Chantal and Hutch are the only married pair in the entire work who are genuinely, uncomplicatedly companionable — and their shared enterprise is contract murder.

Then they are shot to pieces over a parking space, and the season does not pause. A man who manoeuvred through a prison, a federal database and three states loses his two best operatives to a driveway dispute. Twin Peaks has never once promised that consequences will match their causes, and Part 16 is where it says so most bluntly.
