Before the Pilot, Twin Peaks believes Andrew Packard died in a boating accident. His widow, Josie, holds the Packard Sawmill. His sister, Catherine Martell, runs a second set of books against her. His brother-in-law, Pete, lives in the middle of a household that treats him as furniture.

In Season 2 Andrew walks back into the house. The death was staged. Catherine is in on it. Together they run a trap for Thomas Eckhardt — the Hong Kong partner whose enmity reaches into every Packard ledger. Eckhardt dies first, by Josie’s hand. His gift arrives anyway: boxes inside boxes, a bank key at the bottom, a bomb in the vault. Andrew opens it. Pete is beside him. Both die in the same blast that catches Audrey Horne chained to the door.

Andrew is not the Lodge plot. He is the estate plot’s terminal case: a man who survives one murder attempt by becoming a ghost of capital, then dies reaching for the next asset as if inheritance were still a safe word.

Cooper’s Bookhouse reading places Andrew as the mill’s public smile and Catherine as his hammer — different wings of Blue Pine Lodge on Black Lake, an arrangement that holds for decades until, late in life, he does something out of character and marries Josie. He is fond of Pete; Catherine is not. The marriage of Catherine to Pete is the earlier braid of love and property that Josie’s arrival unravels.

Filed as LEAD geometry for the household the series shows, not as filmed biography. What Screen needs is simpler: Andrew is the name on the fortune everyone else is fighting over while he is believed dead.

The town’s working fact, as Season 1 opens, is that Andrew died in a boating accident. Josie inherited. Hank’s prison time is later tied, in Josie’s own disclosures, to protection around that death. Catherine and Ben’s mill war proceeds as if the patriarch were gone.

When Andrew returns, the series establishes that the death was staged — anticipated, survived, used. Catherine is complicit. The public funeral and the will that left the estate to Josie remain the civic weather everyone else lived inside.

The Secret History fills the gap with a Chris-Craft named JOSIE, a September 1987 blast, a seven-figure policy, and Cooper’s reconstruction that Andrew was never in the boat. Andrew Packard appears in the Packard house. Dead, then not. Catherine is in on the staging, and the two of them are running something together against Eckhardt.

Pete is later shown the truth and is flabbergasted. Breakfast at Blue Pine Lodge resumes as if resurrection were a family joke — Andrew and Pete laughing; Catherine unamused; Josie, in the maid’s uniform Catherine forced on her, fainting at the sound of her husband’s voice.

Twin Peaks has now, in a single season, brought Catherine back from a mill fire and Andrew back from the bottom of a lake. The strain is on the record: the Packard-Horne material begins using resurrection as a plotting instrument, and each return costs the show a measure of the mortality that made Laura’s death matter. Josie was sold to Eckhardt in Hong Kong and worked as his servant — disclosed to Truman in “Masked Ball.” Everything after — Andrew, the marriage, the mill — proceeded from that. Andrew’s return finds her already collared by Catherine: cleaning, in uniform, in the house she once ran.

On screen Andrew treats the reunion as both fury spent and leverage kept. He understands Eckhardt’s hand in the murder plot; he also reminds Josie that she never returned his love. He shows himself to Eckhardt and keeps Josie inside the trap the siblings have built.

Andrew’s romance is the estate’s soft face the same way Catherine’s books are its hard one. Neither softens the fact that Josie remains property in every arrangement that touches her — Eckhardt’s, Andrew’s, Catherine’s. Cross-file: Josie Packard.

Andrew’s own gloss, spoken after the return: he and Eckhardt were business partners — Andrew knew lumber, Eckhardt knew Hong Kong; they made money; Andrew got the better of him in a piece of business; Eckhardt tried to stab him in the back. They expect Eckhardt to come back for Josie “like a rat for cheese.”

Andrew confronts him in a Great Northern elevator — alive, needling, warning. Josie later shoots Eckhardt dead in his room. Cooper finds her holding the weapon. She dies in the same room minutes later, without a wound.

The origin of the Hong Kong quarrel is named in outline and never fully staged. What passed between them before Josie remains OPEN as mechanism, even when the enmity is HELD as fact.

Eckhardt leaves a gift: a box containing a box containing a box. Andrew, Catherine, and Pete work through them. The nesting is not a children’s puzzle so much as a taunt — how long will the enemy keep opening things? The innermost yields a key to a safe-deposit box at Twin Peaks Savings and Loan.

The device works because it exploits exactly what the Packard estate is made of: the assumption that inside every container there is an asset. Andrew cannot stop opening boxes, because a box is a thing that contains value, and value is the only proposition he has ever accepted. Twin Peaks is full of containers that hold the wrong thing — a deposit box with a diary, a drawer pull with a face, a ring, a nest of boxes with a bomb. Cross-file: Thomas Eckhardt, S2 E21.

Andrew and Pete present the key. Dell Mibbler retrieves box 14761 at a pace the episode refuses to cut away from. Audrey is chained to the vault in protest over Ghostwood. Andrew opens the deposit. It detonates.

The explosion kills Dell Mibbler, Pete Martell, and Andrew Packard. Audrey is left in the blast.

The scene is played, up to the last second, as comedy — institutional slowness, greed’s satisfaction, the most harmless room in town. Then the civilian plot terminates in the same hour Cooper walks into the Lodge. Pete is in the room because his wife’s brother asked him to be. That is the whole of Pete’s involvement in the Packard fortune, from shore to vault. Cross-file: S2 E22, Pete Martell, Catherine Martell.

Cooper’s Bookhouse volume reconstructs the ghost years: Andrew tipped or sensing the move; a drifter in the boat; passport as Anton Walbrook; Hong Kong returns where he learns what he missed — Eckhardt and Josie playing him; waiting until every player is on stage, including Hank out of prison; trusting Catherine to help. The Chinese puzzle box and bank key are a later endgame, not the same leaf as the Walbrook papers.

Andrew Packard is easy to file as late-season soap — the twinkling resurrected uncle. The harder shape is structural. He is the joint between the town’s property war and its oldest argument about people as inventory: Josie sold in Hong Kong, inherited into a mill, put back in a uniform; Andrew surviving by becoming a false death on a ledger; Eckhardt answering with a gift that looks like money and is a bomb.

Laura’s story and the Packard story are often split into horror and intrigue. Andrew’s file is evidence the split is administrative. Both rest on containers, inheritances, and the refusal to stop opening them.

Dan O’Herlihy plays Andrew across Season 2 — cane, suit, appetite for the joke that turns out to be a bomb. The performance has to carry both the twinkle of a man delighted to be alive and the appetite that will walk him into Eckhardt’s last container.
